WORKSHOP PROGRAM

06-07 FEBRUARY 2019

CTEMF Open End 2019

We return with the eight installment of the CTEMF Open End, a series of workshops and info-sessions curated by the Red Bull Music Studio Cape Town in the lead up to the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival 2019.

The sessions will be taking place at the Studio on Wednesday the 6th and Thursday the 7th of February 2019. Aside from the Starter Pack Workshop, all the sessions are free for the public to attend. Space is limited so make sure you get to the venues early to ensure a seat. Right of admission is reserved.

WEDNESDAY

Starter Pack 12PM to 4PM

We invite all up-and-coming artists to come and have a professional headshot taken of themselves by the Red Bull Music Studio Cape Town Photographer and receive documents and information from the Studio team along with Legalese to help with the basics in regards to your artist career: invoices, contracts, publishing, bios, press-release and sponsorship templates.

There is limited space for these sessions, so we ask that anyone interested please RSVP to studio@za.redbull.com answering the following questions:

  1. What is your artist / band name and what kind of music are you making?
    2. Why are you interested in attending the sessions?

We also ask that if you already understand the basics in terms of invoicing, creating bios and sponsorship proposals, and have professional headshots already that you sit this one out to give those who need the support preference.

We will let everyone who has applied know whether they are accepted or not by no later than Mon the 4th of February 2019.

A Introduction to CTEMF Connect and JOOX 4PM to 5PM

We will introduce the CTEMF Connect program and how up and coming artists can potentially be involved and use it as a platform for their burgeoning careers.

Catching A Break 5PM to 6:30PM

Young artists can feel overwhelmed by what success can look like in the current music landscape. We chat to festival organizer and CEO of Matchbox Live, Theresho Selesho, artist manager and booking agent, Sevi Spanoudi from Black Major and Nic Burger from Universal Music Africa, all individuals with a long history of working in different sectors of the ever changing music industry and ask them what actual opportunities are currently available in the present-day South African music industry.

A Discussion With Colin Gayle 6:30PM to 8PM

Colin Gayle is the Co-Founder and CEO of Africa Creative Agency (ACA). The mission of ACA is to conceptualize, create, and leverage intersections between African culture and global markets by creating the first Pan-African Talent Agency and Digital Marketing/Branding Agency. Drawing on decades of experience across music, media, television and film, Mr. Gayle set his sights on Africa and introduced a myriad of entertainers and brands to the continent for the very first time.

The myriad of his accomplishments include implementing the launch of the 2010 World Cup Inaugural Event, overseeing and producing, hip hop superstar 50 Cent’s storied Tour of Mozambique and South Africa, which ended with the rap legend meeting Nelson Mandela for a highly publicized MTV segment and serving as Creative Executive and Executive Producer for Bounceback Media, which produced the number-one-rated show for Channel O / MNET, Diamond Life as well as The Beef, Behind the Scene, and O’Access. ACA currently represents Nasty C, Amanda Black, Tellaman, Rowlene, Gemini Major, Celeste Ntuli, Vanessa Mdee, Sauti Sol and Diamond Platnumz.

THURSDAY

Not Sorry Club and Lilies present: On the couch with Mina – Getting our music heard 12PM to 1:30PM

The rise of Gqom on the international dance music stage has proved yet again that South African music has the power to capture the imagination of audiences around the world. Mina is a DJ and producer based in the UK who’s DJ sets include tracks by SA artists such as Sho Madjozi, DJ Maphirosa and Distruction Boyz. Music journalist, DJ and event organiser, Attiyah Khan will be chatting to Mina, about her experience of engaging with music from the African continent and how this music translates to audiences abroad.

About Mina: “Influenced by her love of Afrobeats, dancehall and UK funky, Mina’s vibrant and melodic tracks fuse together all kinds of syncopated rhythms from around the world. Outside of the UK Mina has collaborated with vocalists and producers from Peru, Sierra Leone and Ghana, where she also ran a music production workshop for women, as well as recent tour stops in Mexico City, Paris, Oslo & Milan” – Resident Advisor

Through The Lens 1:30PM to 3PM

Being an event photographer is not an easy profession to accomplish full-time, but many amazing photographers around the world have used it as a gate-way to other opportunities and some tackle it as a profession alongside other creative work. We chat to three photographers, Mikhail Adam Motala, Aidan TØbias and Ashiq Johnson, well established in Cape Town’s music eventing industry but who also balance other careers in fashion photography, videography and even music production and DJing.

Track Search 3PM to 6PM

A simple demo-listening showcase introduced at last year’s CTEMF Open End. Open to any music makers and artists, everyone is invited to bring one or two songs on a memory stick or CD. Give us your details and we’ll invite you to come up, play your music to us and the other artists present and tell us about yourself and what you’re doing. This is not necessarily a session to get feedback as to the direction of your music and how it can be improved, although there is the possibility of that discussion happening. Rather it is about connecting with the Studios and other open-minded artists and musicians to showcase the music you are making.
