INTRODUCING THE BUDWEISER STAGE

The Budweiser Stage showcases some of the best in SA’s open-air dance culture. Expect a house-centric program that will lift you to the stars and beyond.

Kicking off with Karoo's low slung, atmospheric journey, we then dive into the depths of Bhatch’s record collection. That’s the perfect setup for Queezy’s glammed-up dancefloor shakers.

After that, we set the stage for the foundations of new and old school masters of house both deep and grooving - Deep Aztec, FKA Mash, Thibo Tazz and Kususa. As the evening progresses, we’re transported to the funky, jacking side of house with Phat Jack and Cornelius vs Dwson.

We end on a crescendo from one of the new masters of the Gqom movement. Incubated in Durban, the iconic sound is now being forged by Khayelitsha's own Ed Harris.

INTRODUCING THE JOOX STAGE

Buckle up for this one. The Joox stage boasts an intimate indoor setting with dazzling lighting and powerful sound, designed to transport you beyond the dancefloor.

Expect techno at its finest. We kick off in the afternoon with the experimental sounds crafted young gun Paz Shina. After that, Not Sorry Club principal Sanetran shares his unique vision, followed by a selection of the team behind Welcome Park – including Luis93.

We gradually click things over, hunkering down with Blueroom’s Cody Meyer. Toy Toy and ALTR head o‌nchos Craig Placid and Terry Aronis go back to back, followed by Thor Rixon and Kyle Russouw. Then, be prepared for the driving sounds of Knowledge imprint label head Deano.

We finally shut down the end of the main festival with a very special set. CTEMF's very own Fogshow send us home (or to the official afterparty) by going b2b with hometown heroes STAB Virus.

FULL LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT

We’re proud to announce our lineup for CTEMF 2019.

Back in 2012, we launched this festival with a specific mission in mind. As music fans first and foremost, our goal was to create an experience that reflects the rich electronic music culture in SA. That’s why we presented with an all-local lineup in our first year.

Nearly a decade later, CTEMF has become the voice of the underground. We’ve evolved through venue, style and format – and hosted some of the biggest names in the the global music scene. But the 8th edition of CTEMF sees us return to the source.

This year, we present an all-local lineup once again. A comprehensive cross-section of electronic music in South Africa. A platform for homegrown heroes to make their mark on the world.

Join us in flying the flag at The Castle on February 9. It’s a one-day celebration of electronic music in the heart of Cape Town.

We’ll have more information for you soon, so keep an eye on us for announcements in the coming days.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CTEMF 2019

We’ve evolved since making our debut back in 2012. A few weeks ago, we were looking at the lineup from that year. AKA. Black Coffee. Floyd Lavine. Goldfish. Julian Gomes. Kid Fonque. In several short years, these artists went from high potential to world class. From locally respected to internationally renowned.

CTEMF provided a platform to showcase their talent at an important point in their careers. We’re proud of that and it made us reconsider our approach to the 8th edition of this festival. We’re making a return to the source with three big changes to ensure an event worth looking back on.

1. A ONE DAY AFFAIR
CTEMF 2019 will take place over one day (and night), with various stages that reflect our rich music culture. This also keeps the festival affordable and inclusive without compromising on the high standards you’ve come to expect from us. As usual, our workshop programme will take place in the week leading up to the event.

2. BACK IN THE CITY
We’ve heard the calls to bring the festival back to the city. CTEMF 2019 will take place at the Cape Town Castle! We’re thrilled to be back within the city limits and make the event more accessible.

3. A LOCAL LINEUP
Past editions of CTEMF have featured acclaimed international headliners. This was important because it helped us get global recognition but we’re putting the spotlight back onto homegrown artists in 2019. International guests will feature at satellite events, but the core festival is a showcase of the finest artists in this country.

We look forward to seeing you at The Castle on the 9th of February, where CTEMF 2019 will pave the way for a new generation of local stars.

ANNOUNCING CTEMF CONNECT 001

The seventh edition of CTEMF saw us continue our efforts with CTEMF Connect. Now in its fifth year, the program identifies local DJs with potential but are held back by limited resources. We then aim to fast track their careers and help them fulfil that potential.

Western Cape-based producers and DJs Ubiza Wethu, Pierre Johnson and Siphe Tebeka, have released their first joint EP through our CTEMF Connect program, in partnership with Universal Music, music streaming service JOOX & Red Bull Music.

“We are proud to have sponsored this year’s CTEMF Connect programme,” says Thabiet Allie, Chief Commercial Officer of Music at Tencent Africa. “One of our key goals as JOOX is to assist in nurturing and growing the local music industry by partnering with festivals, events and non-profit organisations, such as the CTEMF Connect programme and others, who all care about local music as much as we do.”

The CTEMF EP, which is released through Universal Music, and now available via the JOOX app, features ‘Invisible’ by Siphe Tebeka featuring Shirah, ‘Intuitions’ by Pierre Johnson and ‘Dot’ by Ubiza Wethu, with remixes to come.

“It’s been epic to have had the chance to assist these producers by accelerating their careers through our focused workshops,” says David Ireton from CTEMF. “Keep an eye on each one of them; they’re about to disrupt the SA electronic music scene. We’ve got no doubt that they’ll be part of the fabric of local music culture before long.”

CTEMF Connect wouldn’t be possible without the sponsors we’ve received phenomenal support from. Huge thanks goes out to JOOX, the principal sponsor of this programme. This is the first time we have received financial support and its had a huge impact.

Thanks also goes to Red Bull Studios, who gave us financial support as well as access to the Red Bull Studios, where we held workshops, and recorded this EP.

We’re incredibly grateful to Tuerk Music, who provided big discounts on the gear we got for the artists. This included two Korg synths for Pierre and Siphe and an entire home studio for Ubiza Wethu. They also supplied free FL studio sessions and a pair of Technics HDJ 1200 studio headphones for each artist.

Then there’s MADE Agency, who provided us with writing and design expertise, workshops, project management and helped put together electronic press kits for our artists. And lastly, the talented Ian Skene, who shot all our press pictures.

Download JOOX on iOS and Android and start streaming this EP exclusively until the 5th of October, after that the EP will be available on all major music stores.

CTEMF 2019 tickets go on sale in October 2018 - stay tuned..!

DJ LAG - THE KING IS IN THE BUILDING

Real Name - Lwazi Asanda Gwala

Country - Durban, South Africa

Music Style - Gqom

Why is he important?

If you’ve been caught up in the feverish energy of the gqom explosion over the last two years, DJ Lag is probably the man you have to thank. Taking the uniquely Durban sound to the international stage via an appearance on Boiler Room, Lag also caught the attention of London-based label Goon Club All Star who released his EP in 2017 to wide acclaim. Recently his self-released EP 'Trip To New York' achieved notoriety in the press over claims that it had been copied by another artist, but this only served to cement Lag’s reputation as the undisputed king of gqom.

Why have we booked him?

There are certain artists who exude passion and an infectious star quality when they play and Lag is the epitome of this. One of the young founding fathers of the gqom movement and one of the very few taking the genre to the world, we are massive fans of Lag and can’t wait to watch him shutdown that Outdoor stage.
