Submissions for  the 2016 BassXchange UK/ZA competition have been judged by a panel including Cape Town Electronic Music Festival headliner Nightmares On Wax.

Today, British Council Connect ZA and CTEMF proudly announce Leeds-based producer Cateran as the 2016 BassXchange UK/ZA winner.

“Out of all these mixes this mix had a constant groove and took me on journey, which is what you want from a DJ” explains Nightmares On Wax on his decision.

This announcement follows a 4-week hunt by British Council Connect ZA and CTEMF who, together with Red Bull Studio Cape Town launched the third edition of the BassXchange UK/ZA project late in December 2015. The project invites UK-based producers to submit a DJ or Live mix showcasing their own material.

Cateran (real name Stan Vickery) has won an all-expenses-paid week-long trip to Cape Town, South Africa where he will be given the opportunity to showcase his music through the Cape Town Electronic Music Festival Programme, be immersed in one of the globe’s most diverse and rapidly growing electronic music scenes and be given the chance to spend time with legendary UK producer Nightmares On Wax in Cape Town’s world-class Red Bull Studio.

“I wasn’t sure how to approach the mix” explains Cateran,“with such an amazing and broad representation at the music festival for a lot of different musical styles, it was hard to begin. So I decided to focus on doing what I enjoy doing the most; mixing deep tech, minimal and some purer forms techno.”

“I seriously can’t wait to be there” he says, “and I am very appreciative of this opportunity to represent my agency Nightcap and my night in Leeds, Auxiliary - and ultimately give everyone an insight into my perception of underground dance music.”

The BassXchange UK/ZA project aims to be a career-boosting opportunity for a bright, up and coming electronic music artist by offering the unique opportunity to visit South Africa, showcase their music at a leading local festival and network with the South African music community.

Last year’s winning producer, Brighton-based El Train shared his comments: "I had the chance to go over to South Africa last year as part of the BassXchange project and it was an amazing experience. From attending numerous talks at the Red Bull Studio, to DJing in Cape Town and Johannesburg; getting to meet so many amazing people and experiencing the South African culture. I'm just gutted I can't do it all over again this year."

This project is part of the SA-UK Seasons 2014 & 2015, a partnership between the Department of Arts & Culture, South Africa and the British Council.

About Cateran

Stan Vickery AKA Cateran first began electronic music production and DJing in Kenya in 2011 where he met some likeminded individuals who opened his eyes to tech house, progressive trance and techno. His passion for underground dance music subsequently led him to move to Leeds in 2013, where he is currently about to finish a degree in music technology and has focused his signature sound on deep tech and minimal to reflect his international origins and love of the minimal sound which is found throughout continental Europe. He is moving from strength to strength and this has led him to sign with artist management company Nightcap over the summer of 2015. His sets and productions are inward reflections on the essence of underground dance music, with thoughtful track selections, deep, dub influenced sonic aesthetics and constant progression spanning various genres. The list of artists that he has supported is slowly growing including Space Dimension Controller, SEFF, Modec and John Stuckey. His sound has been likened to that of Nima Gorji, Rhadoo and Praslea.
